Brian Kidd, who assisted in first team coaching duties in the national set-up, has been appointed by Portsmouth as a coach to help aid caretaker manager Paul Hart.
The former Manchester United and Arsenal midfielder has enjoyed a well-respected career as an assistant manager, having been youth team boss as well as assistant manager at Old Trafford, and has also coached the England national squad.
His time in charge at Blackburn Rovers was not so successful, but Kidd enjoys a reputation as a well-respected coach and sound 'football man' in England.
Portsmouth have today confirmed that he will help Hart with first team duties while the club continue their search for a permanent appointment to the full-time manager role left vacant by Tony Adams.
Hart is quoted by South Coast newspaper The Portsmouth News as saying, "Brian's a fantastic coach with a great track record."
He went on to add that they have developed a close personal and professional relationship in the past and this understanding could be crucial in steering the south coast side away from the relegation zone, continuing, "We've known each other for an awfully long time and I'm delighted he has come here to assist me."
Kidd, 59, was one of the coaches in the Manchester United set-up who is credited with bringing through now legendary veteran winger Ryan Giggs.
