Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata played some brilliant football in their comfortable 2-0 victory over Independiente at the Juan Carlos Zerillo stadium.
Leonardo Carol Madelon's side earned the three points with goals from Paraguayan defender Ruben Maldonado (25') and Sebastian Romero (66').
Independiente started strongly, and Ricardo Moreira and Ismael Sosa dominated the midfield as the visitors looked for an early goal.
But they missed several clear-cut opportunities in the first half, including a Guillermo Rodriguez header that came off the woodwork.
Independiente paid the penalty for their lack of finishing, as it was Gimnasia who broke the deadlock.
In the 25th minute Ruben Maldonado gave Gimnasia the lead when he met a Mariano Messera free kick with a good finish.
After the break a desperate Independiente pushed forward searching for an equalizer, but they left huge gaps in their defense.
Gimnasia took advantage of this, as Sebastian Romero doubled their lead in the 66th minute when he blasted the ball past Fabian Assman after being assisted by Franco Niell.
Independiente suffered a frustrating defeat, and now they haven't managed a win over Gimnasia since the 25th of June, 1995.
Gimnasia, on the other hand, picked up their third win in four matches, and lead the 20-team league with nine points.
In Friday's later game, Banfield overcame Rosario Central 3-1 with goals from Santiago Silva, Nicolas Bertolo, and James Rodriguez.
