South Korea and Japan have agreed to resume their annual friendly international matches.
The yearly games ended in 1991 but the Japanese Football Association recently proposed that the practice be revived between the two East Asian rivals.
The Korean Football Association (KFA) accepted the proposal and said that the two teams will meet in Tokyo in October and then move to Seoul in 2010.
"Our association has accepted Japan's proposal to resume A matches between the two countries, which stopped in 1991," KFA spokesman You Young-Cheul told AFP.
"It was a conditional agreement. Regular friendlies will take place only if both advance to the 2010 World Cup finals," he said.
At the moment, that looks likely. At the halfway stage of the final round of qualification, South Korea are top of Group Two while Japan is second in Group One.
Both sides hope that the games will also improve relations between the two neighbours who have a sometimes tempestuous relationship.
