In spite of their recent struggles domestically, Bayern notched up their biggest Champions League win of all-time with a 5-0 annihilation of Sporting Lsibon.
Bayern Munich took a while to get a foothold in the game inside the Jose Alvalade stadium but went in half-time 1-0 up thanks to a Franck Ribery solo effort.
Miroslav Klose doubled the lead 12 minutes into the second half, while Ribery added a third from the penalty spot. The game was well and truly put beyond the Portuguese side when Luca Toni helped himself to a brace in the closing stages.
“That was a perfect game for us," trumpeted Bayern chairman Rummenigge on the club's official website, "although no-one could have predicted the final score. We’re delighted.
"Without being complacent or arrogant, I do believe we can look forward to a place in the last eight. We’re aiming high in the Champions League, although we know we’re not favourites by any means.
"But it was still important for us to show Bayern Munich are a very high quality team. You don’t just show up and win 5-0 against opponents of this calibre. All you can do is stand back and applaud the team.“
Uli Hoeness added: “It was tough going at first, but the team went into overdrive after going 2-0 up. We can be extremely pleased. Everything went our way today, almost all our shots went in. We’ve not had that kind of luck in the Bundesliga recently, but today we had all the luck in the world. As we’re 5-0 up, I’m assuming the return will be a pleasant evening.“
