Cesar Navas has explained that he made the surprise choice of moving to Rubin Kazan in order to secure his family's financial future and speculated that the majority of people would have done the same.
The 29-year-old defender has signed for the Russian Premier League champions from Racing Santander in a deal that will see him earn around €1 million-per-season for three years.
While a few eyebrows were raised about his choice, Navas has defended his decision and believes that it was a sensible choice when considering his personal life.
"It was an irresistible offer that I could not turn down," he told AS. "Everything was agreed and at my age I have assured mine and my family's future financially by signing this contract.
"I know that some people say that footballers only think about money and that I am a mercenary, but I think nearly everyone would have done what I have done.
"I do not know anything about the city and I do not know much about the team, but I have been told good things."
The lofty centre-half rose through the ranks at Real Madrid, before joining Malaga in 2003 where he stayed for four seasons before moving to Racing last summer.
